Going to look at a used Tormek

Is there anything I should be aware of, or looking for? This is on my local CL, and I contacted the guy yesterday. Just waiting for him to call me back, now.

Still will probably use the waterstones for touchup, but this would be better for kitchen knives, garden tools, etc.

For Tomek's the price is in the accessories. If it is just the base unit you might be better served by purchasing one of the Grizzlies/Scheppachs or finding a used Delta 23-710.

If you're looking to sharpen plane irons, chisels, gouges, jointer and planer knives these are good investments. However, you can get similar results for knives, lawnmower blades, etc for less money using a grinder with an aluminum oxide wheel. I take my delta out about once a month to blast through my chisels and irons, every few months I throw my jointer and planer knives on the honing wheel, unless there is a significant nick. Our kitchen knives get a touch up when they develop a nick otherwise I just hone them using a diamond block we keep in a drawer. Well maintained a Tormek will last a lifetime, but the grinding and honing wheels are a big cost when they fail.

Think of it this way, how precise does the angle of a kitchen knife need to be to slice a ham? Ask the same question about a jointer knife and you'll get a different response.

Fortunately, the one I lucked into came with all the attachments I needed, or I would have had to shell out a mint for them. If the one you are looking at has what you need, then you'll love it, though. It really works like a champ.

Been D'ing around with him this morning. Guy is local. His Email is his name, which is fairly easy to find (phonebook). But he is dealing with four people (at least one wants to buy and have him ship it to Washington). I've told him, I am LOCAL, have CASH IN HAND, and am WAITING FOR HIS CALL, to come pick it up (has most of the attachments). I may just give him a call in a few, otherwise I am done di..ing around today, waiting for him, while waiting on others who are deciding.

It's pretty common on CL for sellers to simply stop answering their phone or returning calls once an item is sold. Pretty shabby, but I've run into it many times. Last thing you want to do here is act like you're dying to have it, particularly if you intend to negotiate. If you've left your number, just ride it out... He'll call you if it suits him.

I left my phone number the other day, and asked for pictures. Well, he emailed me back, just a little bit before he did some running with his phone number. I called and got his address and found out what time he would be back (8pm). He had one person, wanting to buy it, but in another state (shipping), and others had been "interested" (aka, dickering around). It was already cheaper then I had ever seen one on CL, locally (sub $200), and while it doesn't have ALL the jigs, it had most of the ones I want (still have to go through them all). He had misplaced the manual, but has my info if he finds it, and offered me the Washington guys emails, in case I wanted to sell/ship it (older gentlemen, seems computer shy). I was just a little peeved, as he is retired, and had my contact info. I also told him I went to the bank and had his asking price, CASH IN HAND, and he was dickering around with these, "ah, well I don't know" guys.

Well that frustration you feel happens to sellers as well. Had a guy call and haggle over price of a Ridgid impact driver I was selling and we end up on an agreed price. He says he'll come over later in the day. Never calls. The next day he calls up and says he's coming over that day and never shows.

I've learn with CL to just live with it and as a seller never agree to hold anything for anyone. The most I'll do is hold it for an hour if they say they're on they're way. And as a buyer (unless it's something I really want) I never call back a guy who changes price either from the one listed on CL or one we agreed to initially. When I was in the market for a contractor saw a couple of years ago a guy was selling one of the older (gray) Ridgid Table Saws. I called him up and haggled over pricing till we agreed on a price. He says to call him the next day (weekend I think) to arrange pick up. I call and it just goes straight to voicemail and I leave a message. But he never gets back to me. I end up calling him a few more times after that. A few days go by and low an behold the very same saw is on CL for $200 more than the initial ad. About a week or 2 go by and notice the ad is still there. I get a call from the guy saying if I was still interested in the saw. I just laughed and asked if he was out of his f'ing mind.

Yeah, there are days, I think F CL and those who don't know how to use it, or those who are using it to price something. I called a guy (couple years ago) to buy a drill press. His schedule and mine were opposite (I work nights, him days) and the only time we could meet was two days away. I was happy with his price and offered paypal, or other info, for him to hold it, and he said, not needed, I will see you then. I called on the way out there, the day we were to meet, and he said, "uh, I sold it". (hour + drive for me)

I do see on a regular basis, someone post something, only to see the ad either modified later. Then after it has been posted, and reposted, and reposted, you contact them, ONLY to find out, they don't know how to delete a sold item.

Ebay has screwed over the small sellers, which did drive out the idiots, but guess where they went.

Well as a buyer I'd take CL (even with all the idiots) over Ebay any day. Because on ebay those idiots can also take your money and never ship you anything. DAMHIK

Fraud, even happens with CL (not local, even though posted local, etc). At least they don't limit you with payment options (Postal money order, makes things interesting for the receiver/casher).

Overall, I am happy, as I started trying to figure out what has changed since my model, and what do I need verses want. Even if I got everything (which I need to know for sure what jigs I have), I will only have around (high or low, depends on taxes), what a current t3 is. (that one from what I have read, seems worse then the old HF clone, pretty sad)

                    Off to bed now.

                    Thanks!
