    Canadian Thanksgiving

This is the last official long weekend north of the border until Christmas hits. Our Thanksgiving hits around this time in October while the trees are golden and the air is crisp. Most years it's nice enough to crack the windows while the bird is cooking so the neighbourhoods smell of roasting turkey.

The long weekend also gives that extra day to enjoy the shop, spend time with family, or going for a stroll along a few trails.

I know most of you still have a month to go, but at this time one of the things I give thanks for is this great community of fellow woodworkers. Thank you friends and cheers to each and every one of you.

    Happy Thanksgiving, Richard.

Is yours celebrated on Thursday like ours in the US, or another day? This Monday for the US is Columbus Day so most of us will be off work.

I think I would like the extended holiday season to Christmas. There seems to be such a rush to the finish starting here maybe as early as Halloween but definitely around our real Thanksgiving at the end of November.

I know Columbus day is a federal and banking and post office holiday.
But many private businesses do not adhere to the federal holidays which are partly based on not having more than three consecutive days off (interruption of government and banking).

So for example I don't think the federal & bank holidays include the friday between thanksgiving and the weekend.
Private holidays tend to include the that Friday and other fridays when Christmas and new years fall on Tursday or near the weekend. And always good Friday. That's because people like long holidays where you can combine with vacation or just have 3-four days off.

So that everyone gets their standardish 10 holiday days off per year the feds and banks have COlumbus day and president's day because the don't get those Fridays off. But the private industry tends to give the Fridays off so there's the couple of federal holidays that are traditionally dropped we have to work.

There is a country and I don't remember which one, that follows every holiday with "Recovery Day." When I owned my private business, I always followed that practice.

We have "Thanksgiving Monday" in Canada although most families have their big dinner on Sunday so they can rest up on Monday. My family tradition is usually going on a hike and enjoying the fall colours-as long as it's not raining.

Thank you Richard and everyone else

Once again, I missed the long weekend as I had to travel (3rd one this year). Right now I am in Kuala Lumpur where it is hot and humid and there is not going to be any change in colours!! and forget about turkey.

Hope yours was a good one and I know we all have a lot to be thankful (don't need just a day for that).

                    Happy Turkey Day!

Assuming turkey is also the main course up there?

Speaking of which, what is the traditional Canadian thanksgiving meal?
