    Post Office Box bank plans

Anyone know of any (free) plans for a bank built around an old Post Office Box door?

I have 3 such doors that I've had for years (maybe 15) and always intended to do this. I'm going to do it now... one for each of my boys, and a smaller one for me.

I'm thinking of using a box joint on the side for looks, probably complimented by two different woods (walnut and ash?) But not sure what to do with the top and bottom. I've never done box joints before so that will be a fun learning experience.

Seems pretty basic but looking at a few sets of plans would be helpful too.

    Thanks

I was requested to build something using box joints a few yrs back. I did my research and made the generic pin jig for the router table. What a mess! The antique pine I was using literally exploded with the router. I found Lynn's box joint jig, maybe someone here recommended it. I built my version of the jig and Using a Freud box joint blade I achieved perfect joints. I recently saw this jig on the Shark Guard site (set up using a BT3), and Stubby Nubs site has a new improved version that may be better. Getting the hang of the jig created enough scrap to heat the shop, you've got several more months of cold weather so you should be ok!

Yikes! I was planning on just making a very simple jig uses with a dado set on the TS like you see on YouTube. They all make it look so simple lol. We shall see...

I use the very simple box joint jig that Norm built several years ago on NYW. Very simple to build and use. I use it on my BT with a cheap dado stack and it works fine. I've heard this setup doesn't work well with a router table because of blowout, but I've never tried it.

Norms version is one example of several that attach to a miter gauge and uses a pin.

I don't know about readily available plans - but if you do a search on "box with p.o. box door" in Google images, you'll get a ton of ideas that may give you a direction on how to plan your own boxes. There are a couple box-jointed examples in that lot.

I think these doors might also work in a box designed around Arts & Crafts (e.g. Greene & Greene) style, so also plug this into a Google image search - "greene and greene box". Might give you some more ideas on which to base your own plans.

I've used the pin type miter gauge jig. I did not care for the fact that I was reaching over the jig to move each piece of wood, I figured is was, just a matter of time before I reached over the jig and hadn't pulled it far enough from the blade and came back with only 3 fingers. I really like putting all the wood in the jig and clamping it down and doing all the cuts without having to disturb anything. Probably save as much time as it would take to build the jig. I think that I do like Stubbs version better that Lynn's, I'll probably change mine over to this method.

I did one a few years ago for my granddaughter. Didn't have any plans, design on the fly.
Pictures may still be on the site. I'm in the hospital on a laptop so I don't have access to my pictures.

Found it. The door has tabs that screw into the sides so there is no need for a face frame.

This forum is the place to post photos of your completed projects. Please try to limit pictures to 540px wide or less so that is is viewable to all. Off-topic threads in this forum will periodically be purged so as to keep it "clean".

That looks awesome, Pappy. I may steal a lot of ideas from that one

I think I've settled on doing the two kid's banks with the larger 6 1/2 x 5 1/2" doors in the general style that Pappy used, and then make a third one using the smaller 4x5 door to look more like a mailbox, such as in this picture:

Thanks all for the ideas. Not sure how much time I'll have to work on this but it's now on my short list and will hopefully have some time to start it this week.

I like that design! Any info on more pics or where the slot hardware can be sourced?

Got some work done on 2 of my 3 banks this weekend. In fact, they're basically 'done' other than some final sanding, finish, and cleaning/prepping the PO box doors.

The box joints went fairly well... not perfect, but close enough for jazz lol.

I should be able to carve out some time this coming week for my "mailbox shaped" one.

Sorry I missed this question earlier. I just found the pic via google... no plans or much more info (they were selling them).

The slot hardware is available from ebay or rockler in several styles. I haven't decided if I'm going to use them or not yet (they're overly pricey IMHO)... fortunately I don't need to decide as they could go on anytime. I *will* probably use a medallion of some sort, but not sure what yet.

That is awesome. Any thoughts on how they did the mail slot? That is really cool.
