Never Been So Happy to See My Kid in Pain!

My 20 YO son was on his way to work at SUNY Brockport last Friday morning and got t-boned directly in the driver side door by a van going ~ 55 mph. He was facing west making a left hard turn from a side street onto a southbound lane, and didn't see the northbound van. The car is considerably narrower in places from the impact. They cut the top off the car to extricate him. He was conscious at first, but went unconscious for quite a while during the extrication. He woke up when the top came off. He's got multiple pelvic fractures and a small spinal fracture. He has some minor bumps, bruises, scrapes, etc., but thank God, he looks remarkably good considering the impact. The docs discussed possible surgery most of the day, but after reviewing all the test info and x-rays, they decided it wasn't worth the risk to the spinal column. He's home now and doing remarkably well considering. He'll be doing the "Curly Shuffle" for a couple of weeks, but he should have as close to a full recovery as possible.

I'm usually happiest when I see my kids laughing and having fun.....Friday, seeing him alive was more than sufficient. Hug 'em if you got 'em.....

Aw man! He is a lucky guy to still be topside. He's only got 8 more of those you know. I hope he heals up completely and takes a bit more time to do a double take next time. Thoughts and prayers are with you guys.

As an ex-EMT I have to say first of all, I hope he heals well and quickly. Secondly, a wreck like that 30 years ago would not have had such a relatively happy outcome. The safety features in cars have come a long way and saved a lot of lives.
      Stay safe.

Happy for you and him that he is in the shape he is. Multiple pelvic fractures could hurt for years. Hope he heals 100%!!

Hard to express in words, but we're so happy that he lived through that. My prayers for a quick recovery and no long-lasting pain or rehabilitation.

Best wishes to all your family,

Looking at the pictures, banged up and in the hospital is a pretty good outcome. Hope he heals quickly and fully.

My cousin got hit while changing out his flat on the highway. His pelvic got fractured, femur broken, a couple minor cracks here and there. He was in the hospital for a long, long time to recover. But he recovered and now able to walk and run with his son again. So... I know how you feel. Wishing a speedy recovery for him.

Thanks for the well wishes. He (and we) were very fortunate. We figured if the center of the impact was just 12" further back, the outcome would have been much worse.

I'm glad the outcome was better than it could have been. Beyond that, I'm speechless after seeing the pictures. I will pray for a good recovery.

So glad he's doing well (considering). Air bags did their job it looks like.
