New shop build
Well, we moved the shop 1600 miles. Does that qualify? After 40 years and three shops in Florida it was time for a climate change, so we moved to New Mexico, and built a new shop. I just posted a second shop tour here: http://www.bt3central.com/album.php?albumid=90
If anyone happens to live near Deming, NM, let me know. Love to talk woodworking.Comment

Summer's when I have shop time, so if it's not too hot:
Rebuild work bench
Improve dust collection from a ShopVac to a big-boy DC
More logical tool storage
Finish wiring (including semipermanent lighting)
Redo miter saw station
Possibly insulate walls and face with 1/2" ply (open studs now)
That should be plenty.

Ok, here's a photo of the damage to the garage door after I straightened it to the best of my ability. I have the three replacement panels but I'm waiting for a weekend above 40 degrees to replace the door.
It is my understanding that there are other sites on the web if you'd like to look at photos of cheerleaders.Chr's

You did a pretty good job with that door. Doesn't look near as bad as what I expected from a bunch of cheerleaders driving! Still a little disappointed after waiting all this time to only see a garage door... pretty as it may be with the top lights an all... im just sayingI think in straight lines, but dream in curvesComment

Wanted to query what was on everyone's plate this year for shop upgrades or improvements. Not techniques, but layout, helpers (jigs, etc), storage, etc.
I'd like to have my layout pretty much set, and leave future items in this shop to the structural side. Now that the doors are done, it's time to tweak my productivity. I'd like to have built:
- Miter saw stand w/ storage
- Spot for a midi lathe (cabinet surface)
- Hand tool storage (wall or floor cabinet)
Basically, I'm going to be working with plywood this year, which is completely new for me (sarcasm). It will be interesting to see what actually gets accomplished, with all of my other things I'm doing in and out of the shop this year.
Anyone doing a build or major renovations?
There will be a door enclosing the vac with a couple of air slots, hopefully this will cut down on the sound. The inlet from the separator will run behind the set of drawers below the miter saw. I'll have a tee with two gates that will allow me to get the dust from the miter saw or a stretch hose for every other tool. I'm hoping I can recess the mortiser along the plane of the saw fence, but if not I'll simply have it on top with a couple of removable supports.Comment

Looks great! For sound abatement, you may want to consider lining the opening for the vac with either thick carpet scraps or acoustical stuffing (its like white insulation, but they use it for speaker box filling). Thats a good use of space. I struggle with the shopvac too :-)I think in straight lines, but dream in curvesComment

This is the latest effort of mine to attempt to fit a lathe. It's still very messy, but nothing like it was when I started this morning. I've moved the table saw to the very front, oriented the bench to be an extended outfeed table, and the lathe will hopefully fit along that back wall with room for me to get past it. We'll see.

My to do list that I'm hoping to finish by Wednesday (I took some vacation time to do my shop upgrade):
1. Add more lighting - 90% done, finishing tomorrow
2. New 3/4" top on my 4x8 work table - done
3. Reorganize tools for better flow based on what I do most - 90% done, finishing Monday
4. Add 2Hp HF dust collect -- purchased, delivered, still in box. (Tuesday?)
5. Add wide table kit for BT3--purchased, just need to be set up/built. (soon)
6. Gather up all wood in my shop and organize on 2x8 shelves - done
(found a bunch of great pieces that I didn't know I had).
7. Divide shop to add garden center by framing a couple of 12' walls with double doors (6ft)--postponed.
8. Convert tool room to break room w/drywall and internet.--postponed.
9. Build cart for air conditioner -tomorrow's project.
10. Install high windows and automatic garage door opener.--postponed
11. Add another layer of storage shelves (12 ft high) to hold my mom's stuff (she went to an assisted living facility).--Done
Had to postpone a couple of items as my wife's job went away (just found out Thursday). Glad I had everything for the stuff I'm currently doing. Much of my carts/stands/etc were built from odd sized scraps. My shop is ugly, but it's functional and fun.Last edited by Denco; 05-25-2013, 10:09 PM.*****Measure twice, cut once.....rats, back to the lumber yard.*****Comment

I added not a midi lathe, but a rather large one, thus necessitating the miter saw stand shrinking.
The hand tool storage...might get done.Comment
