    old saw seen

Ha, I was in heavy traffic and drove alongside this old saw in a trailer on I-10. We were basically stop and go which is how I got this pic.
I cannot imagine having to use something like that.

If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.

Yikes. It almost looks like it could also be a lathe - if a tailstock and a toolrest were added to the two big tubes? A ShopSmith wanna-be?

      Maybe the Shopsmith's grandfather.

That appears to be a Shopsmith 10E or 10ER http://songofthegreatlakes.com/ss10errcrestore.htm I have and use a 10ER (as well as a Mark V which is now called a 500) and it works pretty well. The table saw mode has always been the Shopsmith's main weakness, and I have never really felt comfortable using it as a table saw.

I was thinking that was an older Shopsmith model or one of the other competitors to it. Small table saws like that are fine for small/toy type of projects but not sheets of plywood. Heck a friend of mine grabbed up an old 8" saw, for making the trim for he expansion, to match the trim in the 1920 bungalow.
I don't know why you can't see it, as it was a huge help in speed compared to the hand tools that were probably used before that. Think of it like old cars, they bring back memories and are fun to use occasionally, but would you want to use one as a daily driver now?

I believe my 10ER is a 1953 model. Appreciate the ShopSmith link Woodturner provided.

That's a saw?! Wow! I think I would opt for an old Disston.

Definitely a Shopsmith 10ER. I have one just like it in the garage. (Okay, mine is thankfully not that rusty). I would be scared to use it as a saw, but it makes a great lathe and drill press along with a good disc sander.

The Brazilian man that someone posted some of his furniture of used what amounts to a nail file and a sharpened putty knife to create beautiful furniture. If he had tools like this he could build the Tajmahal!

does 10ER mean 10" sawblade? Looks smaller than that to me.

No, 10ER is just a model number with the E meaning experamental. I recently sold mine, I just needed the room. I never used the table saw, but I think it was an 8". The blade does not tilt. The table tilted instead.

That is a rusty, nasty example, but it is without a doubt a Shopsmith 10er.
