I picked up a Woodriver number 6 for my birthday in May. The blade needed honing (no big deal) and I had to flatten the chipbreaker some. Other than that there were no other problems.

I just read, there is a guy named James Owen that works at woodcraft stores at this forum (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=104539) and he explained in detail the measurements they did to the WoodRiver planes, giving a final conclusion that the planes are in general well made. I did not copy the whole thing here because I’m not sure if that is legal, however it is a public opinion forum.

Now there is another controversy as I was reading somewhere else that these planes are copies of LN or LV, and actually when I have read (pretty much) about handplanes everybody have copied from the past and made profits, some probable huge like LN.

If you think that the planes are from just a few hundred yrs as many books say, check the Bible in the Book of Isaiah Chapter 44, verse 13, and you will read how planes were well known there, and he lived almost 2800 yrs ago (800yrs BC), but in reality before the Babel Tower, and close to the Creation (see Genesis chapter 4: 21-23 see also how they built musical instruments)...already planes and many tools were at hand, how do you think that Noah built the Ark, with ropes? Not for sure. It means that every tool designer had copied from others...always.

What can you tell to a guy that loves woodworking and can’t afford to pay that high as LN? I do not have LN, but I have a few of LV and I respect them, they are cheaper than the LN (still expensive) and at the same time I see a product that it is not just well done, but have innovations from a person (probable Mr. Lee) or a group of persons that really want to offer improvements and excel in what they do. I wish I could have the money to buy all the Veritas products, but I don’t, at least so far .

LN have a very good quality also, but I do not see something that I see on Veritas planes in them, and I do not know how to explain it, but I see that they have increased production throughout the years but the prices keep been inflated. Some of their planes are more expensive than a good Power-Jointer or an expensive electric Planner which have more cost-materials, etc, included.

Now you tell me: a worker with a family that probable will never be rich will wait a lifetime to be able to buy one of these planes when he/she see that they have now a good quality affordable=one, like the WoodRiver for instance? That is insane; the person will not stop thinking about if it is right for LN or LV and will buy the needed tool to create the furniture his family wanted, or just to have a fun-woodworking-project during the weekend.

If the market begins to sell good planes at affordable prices factories like LN will have to be realistic with the prices as they have made enough money to dis-inflate those prices a little bit, or they will suffer much.

It is just my opinion, it does not have to agree with others, but the common guy that has to pull out the money from his/her pocket to buy a product that is needed is the one that have the final answer.

Some people had resources, others do not have, and that’s why not everybody has a Mercedes Benz or a Hummer: and you cannot tell a person: “just walk until the day you can by the Mercedes B…but do not dare to buy a Toyota Corolla, just walk… it does not matter how many years or how many mountains”.

Ridiculous at least!

Maybe Phil Thien will pop in here. I believe it was him (I may be wrong), who filed a patent dispute against one of the plane makers. They had applied for a patent, on something that they had copied from Bailey, and (from memory), Bailey's patent had expired in the 20's.

That said, LN (I have one, a scrub plane) tend to be copies of the Stanleys. LV tend to be copies of Nortons. There are other options, and Stanley is back in the game, but I still would like a couple of planes (another block and a rabbet plane), so a bargain might help.
