Headstock Handwheel Question - HF 34706 and JWL 1236

    HF 34706 owners,
Have any of you procured and successfully attached the Jet JWL 1236 headstock handwheel, part number 708344, to the left side of the headstock spindle on your HF lathe? I have read in several places where folks surmise this should work, but no threads providing unequivocal confirmation this has been done.

I am anxious to order one if it works, so appreciate your feedback.

    Thank you!

Is a handwheel pretty self-explanatory in it's function?
I have a little blog about my shop

Yes. Most lathes come with a handwheel mounted on the left side of the headstock these days, for the purpose of rotating your workpiece by hand and to assist in toolless chuck removal. Both the subject Jet and HF lathes came without handwheels however they are available for purchase from Jet. Many have said the HF lathe is a clone of the Jet model including the headstock spindle thread where the handwheel mounts. They are only $33 including shipping so I may just order one and take the chance of it fitting or having to return it. I was just looking for someone with actual success doing this to confirm.

I went ahead and placed the order for the Jet handwheel. I suspect there are many folks here who still own and use their HF 34706 lathes and may be interested in the retrofit if it actually works - so I will report on my findings when the part arrives.

I thought about doing this but had the same reservations. Please let us know if it works. Thanks.

And "Myth Confirmed"! The Jet 1236 handwheel is a perfect fit for the HF34706 lathe. The threads were a bit tight, but they were the correct threads, and it fully threaded into the headstock spindle. Some of my pictures below showing the fit.

So we can chalk this up as DEFINITIVE: The Jet 1236 handwheel, part 708344, is a direct fit to the Harbor Freight 34706 12x33 lathe. As reported, there is no hole for the knock-out tool - but I plan on using only 1x8 threaded chucks with this lathe anyway.

              Thanks for looking.

If I bought one of these, I would use it mostly with a Nova chuck. However, just wondering if it could be removed easily if you needed to use the knock-out tool? Thanks Bill.

Richard, using one of the wrenches on the right side of the headstock spindle I was able to turn the handwheel on by hand with a little effort due to the somewhat tight thread fit. It would remove the same way, so doable. With removing and remounting a few times it would likely loosen up the threads to enable spinning it off more easily.

Thanks. I may spring for one.

Were the threads tight because of the wheel or your lathe? Something you could fix with a tap/die, or maybe a thread file?

I took too long to look at this thread. Thank you for trying this out. I still have / use mine, and have thought about the handwheel upgrade but haven't done it yet.

Cap, not sure if it was the male threads on the handwheel or the female threads of the spindle, or both - but the thread is supposedly some odd 1/2-12 lefthand deal that is reportedly hard to find.

                            Richard, Dave,
Glad to be the guinea pig on this - and wanted the information to be searchable for other folks for the future.

While I'm at it - the NAPA 3L240 or 3L240W (wrapped) belts are viable replacement belts for this lathe, same as the Jet.
