    Hydrogen Hydroxide

We have a group of students trying to ban the use of Hydrogen Hydroxide on-campus.

Apparently, it's a widely abundant, but highly hazardous substance.

Saves lives when used correctly - but can kill you when it's not.

    Anyone here heard of that?

    ;-)

Most likely you mean DiHydrogen Monoxide. Old story about it nearly being banned by some city, until someone with a science background wrote it out in a way others understood the technical name. (hint, Di = 2, Mon =1)
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

Seriously, this again? I thought that hazardous substance was banned by the EPA!

From what I understand, Colorado has a high concentration of it in the mountains . Scientists can even document it reaching cities and towns through river flows.

Interesting that Snopes says FALSE but upon reading the entire article they lay it out pretty good. I think we should ban it and just use beer in its place.

Same thing, different terminology. Hydroxide is an OH molecule, Hydrogen is H, they combine to form H2O or Hydrogen Hydroxide.

Technically it is a "more correct" term than Dihydrogen Monoxide or Dihyrous Monoxide, two terms that were coined for the spoof.

              Philosophical question -

How easy/hard is it to lie with Snopes/Google?

These days, I can see a student simply looking an unfamiliar term up on their cell phone's google app.

So - information is readily available at a very low marginal cost.

Does good information lead to good decisions, though?

It will be banned in California by the end of the week.

I think it's only a Front Range ban affecting mostly downstream users.

My son had a quiz about that stuff in a college science course last fall.....only one correct answer out of 24 students.

A friend of mine was an adjunct professor at Sam Houston State University, and while there are certainly the students who show some real promise, it is also readily apparent that a good number of the students in our colleges and universities are not, well... college material.

Anybody else remember the sulfuric acid dity from high school?

Once there was a little dog,
but now he is no more,
for what he thought was H20,
                          was H2SO4!
