    Cremation urn?

Two days ago I lost a very close friend in a single vehicle accident.

Today his widow asked if I would build an urn for his ashes so he can complete his journey home.

I am of course honored and humbled to do this...

I've done a lot of Internet browsing and sent his wife a number of examples that I think are within my skill set...

Do any of you have experience or suggestions before I begin? I read enough to understand the volume capacity needs to be 200+ cu in. Beyond that it just seems like a 'box' that should be tasteful and agreeable to his wife....

Inside dim= 5"x5"x8"=200 ci. That seems small. I understand that you have googled it, but what if everything did not fit? If I had this honor I think I would pay a funeral home / crematory a visit and see first hand and pull a tape on the real thing.

Yeah I definitely don't want it too small. My friend was about 185lb and this link gives a guideline

1 cu in per 1 lb of body weight - that seems pretty straightforward.

My condolences for the loss of your friend.

Sorry for your loss. My wife had her best friend pass away from cancer and she had asked me before her passing if I would do an urn for each of her three children. I accepted her request with great honour and turned three urns for her that she got to see before she passed. Her children still cherish the fact that they have a piece of their mom with them. That was 18 years ago and we all still have her in our thoughts and prayers. I checked with the funeral home and got the volume from them.

          Regards Bob

First of all, my condolences. I am sure that any urn you make will be appreciated, and obviously full of memories of your friend.

My mother was cremated just before I turned 8. I think our financial situation played into the decision. We received her remains in a hard, sealed plastic box. We finally were able to bury her nearly 20 years ago. As best I remember, the box wasn't much larger than a decent size book. So, your measurements are probably pretty close to right.

If I may suggest it, a phone call to the crematorium may be a good idea, just to make sure.

Thank you for the responses I did in fact go to the funeral home and got a chance to measure exactly the size of temporary box he will be returned in so I'm good to go on dimensions now I just need to find out exactly what it is I am building building

A friend of mine worked at the local Woodcraft and was commissioned to make an urn for a young man. This can be viewed at another site and I hope I don't break any rules by linking this. (If so, remove it.) He is a professional furniture maker.

Thank you ... We had it laser engraved ... I thought it was nice.

The wood is mesquite because he grew up in West Texas (which is covered in mesquite) and Black Walnut which is what he always bought when we went to the mill.

                          My condolences for your loss.

What did the final interior dimensions end up being? Does the lid get permanently attached?

Currently the lid is set with 8 small rare earth magnets ... I told his wife if at some point she wants to seal it just put dots of super glue on the magnets and set the lid back on.

The dimensions were exactly as I measured the "temporary box" supplied by the funeral home and fit nicely inside.
