    Pneumatic stapler - ring replacement

I've had a HF 40072 air stapler for 10 years or so. I've used it occasionally over that time, but never very hard. I needed to use it the other day and it sounds like the o-rings aren't sealing properly. I took it apart and the rings look easy enough to replace - but how do I know what sizes to get and where do I get new rings?

    Thanks!

    HF offers all the parts.

Check the owner's manual - or call them.

local hardware stores like the ACE hardware near me have boxes of O-rings of all sizes that they will sell individually. I don't see these at Lowes or HD.

Anyway by choosing o-rings that are close in size you should be able to get it back to operation.

I had an old HF air stapler that some internal parts broke (not o-rings) I contacted HF but even though I had the individual part numbers they said they no longer supported that model and had no record of parts for it.

If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.

Thanks for the replies! I'll check out the HF store or Ace.

FWIW, I did check the manual - there are about 5 different o-rings that are clearly different sizes, yet the exploded diagram in the manual gives no sizes. The description for each is simply "o-ring" (which isn't very helpful).

Have you tried lubing up the o-rings? Sometimes that's all it takes.

If you go to Ace, bring the originals. maybe label where they came from.
When replacing them, both the diameter and the thickness of the O-ring are critical.
o-rings are round cross section and thee grooves and OD form a square cross section. the o-ring should be squeezed but if the area of the ring cross section is greater than the area of the cross section there will be no place for the rubber to go and you will damage the o-ring pinching it. Too small and it will not seal. Bringing calipers is a good idea if you have them.

Harbor freight has O-ring assortments, currently showing 4 items:
              # 67554 $7.99 currently on sale
              # 67580 Metric $7.99 currently on sale
              # 67609 Metric $$4.99 sale
              # 67677 $4.99 sale

I have one set that is so old that I probably need to replace it. I guess I have used a about half a box over the years. I use them more for other things than for replacement o-rings: Stops, rubber washers in vibration situations, spacers etc.
