I think they are made for discovering that solid piece of wood is actually veneer. Or to rapidly discard of excess wood plus an extra 1/16th you did not want gone. Or to make you invent new swear words. Or to make a large dimple in previously flat pieces of wood.

are you implying they're not belt sanders but belt gougers?

I have pretty good luck with belt sanders removing excess knuckle meat.
