What would you do with this piece of wood?

First off.. What kind of wood is this??

2nd.. What would you do with it?

It's about 1 3/4" thick.. What you see is all I have.

I picked it up today thinking of using it for pens but the counter guy didn't think the grain would show well in a small turned project.

    Got it for $12

I even got a back story on it..
I got it at a wood supply downtown..
The owner cut these boards 35 years ago and didn't even know they had any left..
I found it in the way back corner of their off cut bin with the price already marked.
They were cool and honored the price.
This said most of their stock was used to make custom gun stocks and grips.

Looks a lot like a piece of hickory I have. Unless you clean it up to find Walnut.

Turn into a bowl / plate, I guess?

I'd say the wood type is flame, curly or quilted maple.
This ebay search does yield similar looking pieces.

Get the best deals for flame maple lumber at eBay.com. We have a great online selection at the lowest prices with Fast & Free shipping on many items!

I like the look of it.
I built a chess board using some of it that I bought off Ebay several years ago. You may not have enough for that, but it could be used in a similar fashion for a cutting board. That way you could see and appreciate it's figure often.

Could be walnut too as mentioned. Is it heavy or dense feeling? If so, then likely maple. If not, then walnut.

I vote for walnut, especially if it was with wood used for gunstocks and grips. Really beautiful wood whatever it is. You could use it for the lid of a jewelry box. If large enough, you could use it for a corner table top or phone table (or do these even exist in today's world of cell phones?).

Guessing from the dollar, about 8" x 10". Resawn to a 4 way book match it would make a beautiful top to an occassional table.

My vote is on the walnut as well. When you machine walnut it has a particular smell. I couldn't explain it, but its unique and if you've worked that wood before you will know. I've seen quilting like that in walnut, I specifically used it for the body of the rocking horse I did as it resembled ribs

Backgammon board. High on my coveted projects list.... +1 with Pappy on resawing it, to pretty too waste as a solid chunk!

Crotch grain walnut. I agree that it would not be as vivid in small projects such as pens. Agree with Pappy on a fitting use, although making pistol stocks would also be good.

I agree that if it could be re-sawn to 4 pieces and it would make a great table top.

Below is a plate about 7 inches across with some great grain that I picked up in Japan. I love the grain that your wood has and like this below.

I usually don't miss money but I didn't see the dollar before leaving my previous post. I agree with you, Pappy; it could be resawn for a small table.
