        You guys......... it is not a physics problem. It is a monkey problem. A monkey could climb a rope up a pulley even if it did not have a bucket of sand on either end. And he would throw the hand full of poop at you from the rafters where you could not get to him.

                  I agree that is one "correct" answer, for one particular set of assumptions. Those assumptions appear to mix real and ideal components.

                  If we make ideal assumptions - frictionless pulley, weightless rope, etc. - it doesn't matter where the monkey is located on the rope as position does not affect equilibrium.

                  I think the value of these kinds of problems is that it gets people thinking. There is no "right" answer, but thinking about the problem builds cognitive and reasoning skills.
