    First all-hickory project

I finished my first all-hickory project yesterday and while it turned out fine and the person who wanted it loves how it came out, I am less thrilled about working with hickory.
I had to machine all of the stock (just over 40 board feet) from rough-cut material and this hardness of this old-growth hickory did a job on my jointer and planer knives, though both had lots of miles on them already.

That is beautiful Tom and very nice work. I personally have never worked with Hickory except to turn a pen.

Beautiful cabinet, Tom. The grain pattern and contrast from the sap wood is fantastic.

Let me guess, the wife said nothing new for a while, and you've been wanting some new blades?

Does the hicory smell like urine? I cut some turning blanks one from hickory, and they really smelled.

The hickory did not have any real smell to it when cut. If it started smelling like urine, that might have been the end of THAT project!
My cutting tools are fine. All of them had lots of miles on the knives and I had been crusing along cutting walnut, maple and oak with no problem. the hickory just took the knives over the edge (so to speak). I sharpened the jointer knives this morning and they came out fine. I'll look at the planer knives over the weekend. I have another fresh side on them but I might be able to freshen the edge once more...We'll see.

Hickory can dull enev fresh blades very quickly. It's tough stuff, but gorgeous.

I wanted to do my kitchen cabinets with Hickory, but after hearing (reading) about how hard it really is, decided not too. But that looks lovely. The Ash I ended up using looks very nice, but I still would have loved the contracts in Hickory. Maybe my next kitchen:-)
