Ha, and I thought my workbench was glossy!
I see that you made the same measuring device that I did (lower-right picture). So, did you also use a penny for the internals?

      Question about vise

I'm a curious about the vise on the end of your bench. It appears to clamp to the benchtop? Is there anything functionally different than other bench vises?

I'd like to see inside some of the drawers, if there's anything special going on in there. (Might be something you have planned for a subsequent post.)

Also, I'm curious: were the open shelves on the end panels of the workbench an afterthought, or did you have them incorporated into the design from the outset?

Final - Doubt he used a Lincoln penny- maybe an aussie penny?

Interesting idea for small parts. I think I'll have to look a little more closely at those GladWare type of cheap plastic containers and steal that idea. I already use some of the cheap ones with screw tops for biscuits (I figure they need to seal better than the standard ones.

I still don't know all the tools I need yet, enough to be that organized.

Impressive bench layout Rod. I have been cleaning up my garage so I can do a bit more "work" in there. Your pics are great for getting ideas. In order to spend more time making useful (for LOML) things, I purchased some inexpensive cabinets.

                    Thanks.

Thanks for the kind words, guys.

Final_t/Loring: I DID use a US penny The closest Oz thing I had was 5 cent coin but they have a milled edge and are an "odd" size. The US penny is exactly 3/4" dia. For some weird reason I've kept a bunch of US pennies from our travels to the US.

This is what we're talking about: http://www.woodworkingtips.com/etips/2007/03/30/sn/
BTW - MEASURE, don't believe those given.

John: The Zyliss vise is much more versatile than a regular bench vise - the clamp-on feature being one of them.

LarryG: The open ends were planned - this is the third bench I've built.

Nice bench area, like several of your ideals.
                            Several question for you Rod:

What is with the the Penny?? No clue what item you are even talking about. How is it used?? (OK, any one that knows can answer this one).

Why the saw in the glass box?

How many trash cans do you have in your shop?

What is all in the drawers? Tools, parts, files, patterns, etc?

Glass, clear plastic, or something else on the cabinets?

I'm thinking (from past posts) your bench top is two layers of 1" MDF, with a poly top? How many coats of poly?
                            Ric

Why the saw in the glass box? Carry over from my "rusty" garage.

How many trash cans do you have in your shop? 3

What is all in the drawers? Tools, parts, files, patterns, etc? YES

Glass, clear plastic, or something else on the cabinets? 1/8" acrylic

I'm thinking (from past posts) your bench top is two layers of 1" MDF, with a poly top? How many coats of poly? Actually a single layer of 1-1/4" HDF (HIGH Density Fibreboard). MUCH heavier/harder than it looks! 4 coats of high-gloss poly, applied with a small roller.
