What's the limitations of the Jet 10x14 lathe?

I have an opportunity to pick up a Jet JML1014 VSI for $200.

Just wondering what size of bowl am I limited to with this mini lathe? I have never turned before, but I don't want to be limited to just pens.

The Jet 1014 lathe- the 10 stands for the maximum diameter that can be turned, and the 14 stands for the working length of the bed. Of course you can add an extension to the lathe to increase the working length if you so choose. Hope this helps.

Thanks, that does help. I can live with a 10" round bowl.

I guess extending that 14" might be needed for table legs etc, right?

Right... It is, after all, a mini lathe. Turning big hunks of wood is a stretch for it (or any other mini). That said, I have one for turning pens, stoppers and chess pieces, and I love it. And 200 bucks for a nice one is a steal, because with the big price increase Jet had earlier this year, you'll rarely see a new one cheaper than about $425...

Thanks, UC. That said, allow me to gloat a bit : I went off and bought that lathe, and got a nice extension and that large stand too, all for that $200!

Just checked on Amazon, all that would have cost me around $650! I guess I can go watch TV now - a good day's work done .

            YOU SUCK!!!

Take the money you saved, and get you a 'Cuda mini chuck (CSC500K), some bowl jaws, and a good 60-degree live center (#2 MT), and you're set...

Oh, and don't forget some good tools...

Since I did not understand any of that, guess I'd better get myself a good book on turning, what say?

Congratulations on the great buy. You will love it, I started with a 1014 and it was great many pens, bottle stoppers and candle holders.

I don't know a lot about lathes, but I do know that the Lathe is the least expensive part of the whole works.

You DO suck, but it will still cost you.

One of the best things you can do if you're a noob is find the nearest Woodcraft, and take the basic turning and pen turning classes. Get your hands on the accessories before you buy them. Each class will cost you a hundred bucks and a Saturday, but they're worth it (and you got extra cash... Did I mention that YOU SUCK?)

                        limitations of Jet 10x14 lathe

Most of the limitations are in the users mind for this lathe! This is a great mini lathe powerful, solid, and well built and a pleasure to use! This lathe
is limited to a 10" swing which translates to a 9 1/2 "diameter bowl (maximum). Without an extension to the bed it is 14" long, sort of short
in my opinion but a good one, none the less!

I would like to have more swing over the bed to turn larger bowls, but
a larger lathe would take care of that! All that being said, this a good lathe
and will serve you well for years to come.

I have one and like it and really enjoy turning with this lathe and you will too.

200 bucks, are you kidding! That's a screamin deal. Lets see, oh yeah, 40 lattes at Starbucks and all you get is a lotta trips to the bathroom. Congrats and welcome to the world of turning.

I was going to suggest checking out the new 12-20 until I saw the 200$ bit, you do indeed suck! That's a great score!
