    Another plywood question!

Not that I really want to know....but...

When we purchase plywood that says 'Made In China'...do they use their own trees or do they buy trees from US or elsewhere?

I just discovered that the plywood I got at the local lumber yard is indeed made in china. I had not noticed that printing on the edge before I began cutting it up.

I can tell you from previous knowledge that alot of the ply coming over in containers is indeed chinese sticks cut down in china. They have birch or something that looks just like it!

Their sources are both domestic and import. Here are some details.

Thank you Cman, that is informative.
So, part of the plywood may have been from my back yard(mid ohio timber) and some from over there. I'd guess the very thin stuff that would be hardwood is from here!
It also seems I am contributing to the widening trade deficit by purchasing this stuff. But now I don't know where to go to get materials that are reasonably priced and domestic.
Just cannot understand how it can still be profitable to ship trees over there, have them make panels and ship them back. All that time and freight and it is still cheaper than making it here. Amazing! And sad! I wonder what else is included in these panels that we are not aware of? Anybody check them for lead?

Don't even joke about that. Drywall and floor tile currently made in Mexico has a chance of containing asbestos. We landed up testing one of our new buildings at work because of it.

Part of the reason it's cheap is that often we taxpayers are subsidizing it. We give the Forest Service money to build roads for the forestry companies, we give those companies really cheap rates for extracting our forests ("If you don't, we'll close down and lay off all those local taxpayers and voters"), we pay for much of the cleanup and remediation. The Chinese plywood industry, our forest company owners, some politicians, and a Forest Service busy building roads all benefit.

At least my toilet paper is still made here.

I guess that it means that the country's in the crapper, or our economy is going to $hit.

I'm doing a job now that requires Koa veneer plywood, and it was made in China. We send our Koa logs to them to make the plywd. 3/4" x 4 x 8, Sequenced matched & numbered 2 side good @ $295.00 per sheet. Can you imagine what it would cost if it was made in USA. Wonder what the middle man is making per sheet? Koa is a native Hawaiian hardwood, loggers can only harvest dead/felled trees. A good log can fetch $60K or more.
