Our 6 year anniversary was this past Sunday. The traditional gift for 6 years is wood and my wife has graciously agreed to a lot of my tools requests, so I thought what better way to repay her than with a handcrafted item for our anniversary?
I used two pieces of bubinga, a 2x2 turning block that I chopped at a 45 deg angle, mounted with screws to the 1x piece sized down appropriately (no idea of the full dimension, maybe 3/4"x2 3/4"x12"). The base has a 15 deg bevel on the bottom and 30 deg bevel on the top to give it some added dimension. The nameplate was made by a local trophy shop and includes the logo for the university she works at. The finish is simply three layers of polyurethane with light sanding in between. This turned out, obviously, to be a LOT more expensive than if I had simply purchased a nameplate for her, but I had fun making it.
My wife *seems* to like it (sometimes you just cannot tell) but at least she appreciates the fact that I made something for her and it turned out nice. Since I kicked her out of the garage for a few nights to finish this, she was getting a little worried that she was going to end up with an ugly piece of furniture that she would have to pretend to like. I think I did a *little* better than that
