Hoping for opinion on bench top/side panels

I have found some plans that I like for a bench that is fairly easy to make. It calls for 3/4 MDF for the sides and 2 pieces glued and screwed for the top and then edge banded with oak for durability. The legs are dimensional lumber.

Given my level of knowledge, I think this bench is achievable as compared to a solid wood top.

My quesiton is this---I know MDF is known for it's durability and ability to stay flat, but it's not very pleasing to the eye and I really don't care for the dark work surface. The plan does count on the weight of the MDF for stability, at least in part.

My local orange store has 4x8 3/4" MDF for $31 a sheet BUT right next it is 3/4" 4x8 Maple veneered plywood on closeout for $39 a sheet. That's not much of a price difference. Would it be a bad idea to sub the maple ply for MDF?

Thank you from a stupid noob just trying to learn

I'd recommend a glued-and-screwed ply surface, because you can renew it (take out the dings, get rid of the glue/finish globs) from time to time with a simple sanding. You cannot easily do this with MDF. A hardwood edger is a nice addition to either surface. Also, make sure the leading edge and the ends have overhangs that facilitate clamping.

Most plywood is dimensionally stable, it should be good instead of MDF. Watch out for some of the stuff that's available from HD. Many carry some inferior Chinese products which have voids, unstable plys, delamination etc.. Take a good look at the cut edge for voids and such, also eyeball it for flatness.

The surface veneer on that plywood may be only paper thick, looks nice if you're careful with it. That might not be the best surface for a workbench.
