Book cases, 6 years in the making!

Back in 2003, I promised my middle daughter who loves to read, that I would make her some book cases. I did tell her that I would not be able to get them to her until we went home for retirement.

ALL of the wood that was used (except for the back board which is plywood) and the small appliques at the top, bottom and center next to the drawers - are from a student center in Kobe. It was torn down in 2004 and I got as much of the long large bookshelves as I could when it was being torn down. It took about 6 years from beginning to finish to make the cases.

The wood is Lauan. But some of the boards, when sanded were reddish, some were tannish, though it was all the same kind of wood. It is sometimes referred to as Philippine mahogany even though it is not a true mahogany. No medium colored stains could make the two different colored woods come out equal, so I had to go with the darker color, which is what my daughter wanted in the first place. (However, LOML didn't like the dark color, but I told her that they were not for her.) The bottom picture is closer to the actual color (at least on my screen). Lighting, flash and angle made each picture come out a different color. It is fairly dark in natural lighting.

The vertical sides with the front piece (which has the groves in it) - that was done in 2004 and 2005. The book "shelves" were sized and cut in 2006-2007. The middle with the drawers were done in 2008; the top and bottom sections were done in 2009 as well as construction completed this past winter. I added the stains back in April and three coats of clear water based urethane in May. It was not assembled for the finishing process. I let it set in my small shop over the summer curing.

Early this month, I put one unit together to see how it would look. Below are the picts. Immediately after the picts, I took it back apart.

Of course it is made so that the top comes off with 4 bolts (hidden); The bottom comes off with 8 bolts (hidden) ; the middle with 4 bolts (also hidden); the back come off with a few screws, - so packing for shipping back to the States will take about 1/4 of the actual space.

Specs: 35 inches wide at the base and top, with 30 inch shelves; 86 inches (7 ft 2 inches) tall. 12 1/4 inches deep at the base and top with 9 3/4 inch deep shelves. Shelves are adjustable.

I really like that! Great proportion and love the color in the pictures, it matches my mental image of that period furniture. Did you do the carvings? Your daughter will be very proud to have that especially since "Dad" made it.
I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken.

Now you have to pack it up and move it?

The carvings came from LeeValley - from their hardware catalog.

Next time, I will do my own, but this was the first and experimental set. I have oak back in the States that I will make into a similar set with different and made-by-me appliques. Those carvings were OK but I saw a different design when was at a Japanese home a couple of weeks ago. It was simple but designed appliques that I could make myself.

Great work Hank, that is a beautiful looking bookcase. Do you know where she plans to use it in her house? She may need a twin!

                          That is a super, elegant

bookcase. Looks much better than any store bought bookcase costing hundreds of dollars (or yens?). You did a professional job and it shows. Congrats sir, and to your daughter too!
