    HF sale items: recommendations?

    Hi all,

The 12 speed HF benchtop drill press is back on sale:

    http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=44836

I looked through previous posts, but didn't see much on this DP. I've been looking for a while, but would like to know if anyone else has tried this particular unit, and if you would recommend it.

Ditto on compressors. I was looking at this 8 gallon:

Seems like the holy grail is a compressor that is (a) not huge, (b) can run both tools and hvlp type spray guns. After looking at the sfcm requirements of most guns, I realized that this is a pipe dream . I really only need it for nail gun use at this point, so had a peek at these as well:

    Any opinions and recommendations welcome...!

I have a 8 gal compressor from harbor freight. They have 2 different 8 gallon compressors, but they are really similar, so get which ever one is on sale.

As you realized, no compressor this size is going to run a HVLP gun!

It works great for nail guns, blowing stuff off, and running other air tools that dont take a huge amount of air.

Three advantages to getting a 8 gallon instead of the pancake or twin tubes that I can see.

    1. The 8 gallons have a regulator on them! You will have to add one to the smaller compressors. This is nice so you can change the amount of air going to your tools.

    2. The 8 gallon models have wheels! I find myself moving my compressor ocassionally, and when I do move it I usually just have to wheel it around. I pick it up to go upstairs, but that is about it. They get rather heavy. Even the small pancacke and twin stack models weigh 50+ pounds.

    3. Larger tank keeps it from cycling as much. Yes, it will take a bit longer to fill, but it is not unreasonable at all.

I also forget if the smaller units have drains on the tanks. My 8 gallon does.

I have really been pleasantly supprised by how much I use mine, and how well it works.

For using nail guns and blowing things off a small 2hp pancake compressor should work well for you. For using a HVLP sprayer I'd suggest 6 1/2hp hp minimum.

        dr_skoobie:

If you decide on the 8-gal #90385, you can save $10 ($109.99 instead of $119.99 shown on the web site) by using a different item number.

Use item #90385-2KCA when you order it. Price good thru 9/1/05. Was in Wood Mag ad Feb/Mar 2005 issue.

Can't tell you how it works, my was damaged in shipment. A replacement is on the way.

I have one, and I'm not a big fan. The 1/2 hp motor isn't -- I can stop the chuck (and the motor, it's not just because of belt slippage) with my gloved hand at certain speed settings. If you have the extra $$ I'd suggest the floor model DP, number 43389. 1 HP motor, 16 speeds, and can accept much larger pieces. However, it is a LOT more expensive.

I bought that drill press not too long ago and just started putting it together yesterday. Of course that wasn't on the honeydoo list so assembly was put to the side for now.

I found these threads that mention this DP. Don't know if you saw them or not but the concensus was pretty favorable.

Ooops.... This is what happens when I don't read well enough.

When I replied about the DP, I just glanced at it and thought that it was an updated model of the one I own. It's not, it's entirely different. I have the 44506, which is a 1/3 HP model. So, it's not an "apples to apples" comparison. I wouldn't get the 44506 again, but the one you're looking at might suit your needs nicely.
Again, have fun with the new tools!

                  Hi,

I don't know a lot about compressors so maybe someone can explain the differences between the small pancake and twin compressor dr scoobie is looking at. From what I can see, they are both oil lubricated. The pancake does 4.2 CSFM @ 90 PSI while the twin does 3.8 SCFM @ 90 PSI. I do see that the twin runs at half the RPM's than the pancake. What advantages does having twin tanks give you that the pancake doesn't? Are there any other advantages one has over another? I do have a 26 gal vertical 5.5 HP Cambell Hausfield I just bought from my dad but am looking for something portable that I can bring up to the cabin to run nail guns and such.

                  Thanks

                  Kevin

                  Thanks
