    Kitchen Island Top

This was a quickie project made from 1" thick hard maple. Just a retopping and expansion of the kitchen island. It went from the original 39.5" x 51 with no overhangs to 48" x 71" and now has 3 overhangs to accommodate some stools for seating.

It was supposed to be done last weekend, but the LOML changed her mind after I had glued up a 40" x 74" panel! (complaint post here...)

Nothing too technically challenging, but dang that hard maple resists sanding! It takes alot of effort with 50 grit belt sander to get it to cooperate, then you need to spend several hours sanding off the sander marks....the best way to tell if you've got them all off is to apply a finish. (DAMHIKT! )

All of the maple was free. Most of it came from the dumpster at work...it was formerly used as 2x8 bumper boards. The edge pieces are from an old library table that my BIL moved out when we made him a new maple and granite conference table for his new office ....that's also maple best I could tell, but prolly not hard maple. I laid out the arc by bowing a piece of wood and just traced the outline, then freehanded it on the BS, and followed up with more sanding. The finish is a semi-gloss poly, but the pics make it look glossier than it is.

It's likely that we'll now paint the base of the island. Stools to follow....but I'm buying them!

Nice job with that top. I guess your wife would object if you put holes for bench dogs.

Get busy scrapping and dumpster diving now. I have a feeling she is going to decide the rest of the counter tops are too plain!

Beautiful work! Even with a mid-project redesign (BTW, it was the right thing to do!)

Thanks everyone. We still haven't settled on stools yet, so we haven't had the chance to really put it to use yet, but it's been a great catch all so far!

The midstream design change did indeed have it's merit...I just didn't want to hear it last Saturday morning...Here were the first few conversations we had after that discussion....Saturday afternoon, "no Dear, it's fine...no I'm not mad" () ...Sunday afternoon, "really Honey, it's a good idea....really, I'm not mad ()...Monday afternoon, "it's coming along Sweetheart, I'm glad you decided to change it. ()....Tuesday afternoon, "Here ya go Love, one more coat and it's yours...any more changes before I add the 3rd coat? ().

SWMBO seems happy "Larryl"....I'll let you know Tuesday after our 25th anniversary dinner! "bthere", I had the same thought about the benchdog holes....it's nicer than my workbench. "Pappy", we've already had the kitchen makeover discussion...but I reminded her that I needed to finish painting the dining room that's been waiting for her color decision for the past 15 months!

The arc is a nice design element. I can't see why you wouldn't earn mega points with the wife.

Beautiful, might just be in my future too. May I asked how you joined the boards? Just glued up, or did you use biscuits or some such?

                            Thanks

Hi Gerd - You may! This was a straight glue up, but was an excellent situation to have used biscuits for alignment....a couple of the boards had some bow in them. I just didn't want to be bothered at that point so I dealt with it while clamping them. I had 1" thick material x 6' so I wasn't too concerned about the strength of the joints.
