Shop Update [PICS] (Day 9, Sept 27, 2009)

In a recent post, I put all my cards on the table. No, the shop is not spic and span,
but it's getting there. I have a long way to go. The workbench (construction
was described in this 5yo post) was moved out of the corner and is in front of TS.

The TS is 36 1/2" tall but the bench was almost 39" on casters. I couldn't
give up the bench mobility and I wanted to keep using this bench, so I
completely deconstructed the workbench to make it shorter. I cut off 2"
from the boxes and removed one 3/4" ply board. It didn't impact the drawers,
but DOH! forgot about the doors. Oh well, I'll figure that out later.

When I first made the bench, I didn't have a face vise. Years ago, I cut open
a section of the benchtop to secure a heavy vise for hand tool work. I was
leaning on that corner when I was putting the bench back together and
cracked one MDF rib--circled in red. The corner was a little floppy and being
supported by the 3/8" ply underneath. In the same pic, you can see how I
used some leftover thread all to pull the corner tight again. Below that
empty section is the insert that fills in the empty space. I glued on some
MDF blanks for future bench dog holes.

Originally, the face frame was brad nailed on. It came off pretty easily when
I took the bench apart. In redoing the bench, I put the whole face frame
back together with pocket screws. I still need to put the pretty side skins
back on, but you can see what the bench look likes almost finished. The left
side houses my compressor. The middle has a bank of 4 drawers where I keep
stuff like sandpaper. I now will dedicate 2 drawers to my hand tools. The
right side housed some jigs. I will install pullout shelves there and put all my
nail guns, router, and jigsaw in it.

In case you're curious, the benchtop skirt on the left side of the bench moves
up and down. I can raise it up to serve as a stop for boards when I'm hand
    planing.

I knew HD had some plastic shelves but Lowes was closer on the way home
from church today. Lowes didn't have any in stock. Grrr...Two shelves
should really clean up the shop a lot more. Gotta' go to HD after this.

After I finish with the bench, I need to fill the gap between the saw and
bench to officially make it the outfeed table. I then want to build a cabinet
under my TS extension table to serve as TS storage and router table storage.

    Wish me luck!
